The Apple of my Eye

IT took a while for me to warm to this book, it kinda needed something but i can not quiet put my finger on what it was.
I pushed through to the end and ended up enjoying the book, however I suggest anyone reading the book, stay with it, the story does improve and in the end you will be glad you did

This Book Delivers in a Gentle Way - I loved it!

Author Christine McGreggor has penned a very nice debut novella with, The Apple of My Eye. I always enjoy finding promising new authors to read, and Christine McGreggor is now on my list of promising authors.

The story opens with the main character -- Michelle Perry -- has just inherited her grandmother's house and when offered the opportunity to sell it, chooses instead to move into the house which held such good memories for her as a child. But memories are fragile things, and almost immediately, Michelle is confronted by the harsh reality that her volatile neighbor intends to cut down the beloved apple tree that reminds her of her grandmother.

Relationships and memories are what bring this story to life, and Christine McGreggor has a knack for showing why the apple tree, which represents Michelle's love for her grandmother, matters so much to her. This story is not flashy or morbid in any way, but carries you along with the real-life situations you can imagine yourself into. In short, I found myself caring about Michelle almost immediately, and wanted to know what would happen next. The book has a few unexpected twists and turns, and they served to deepen my interest. Finally, the writing and care in editing in this book is apparent - you can tell that the author is on her way to being a true professional with a long career.

This book is definitely one you want to check out of you like gentle romantic dramas where there is a good story and you close the book at the end feeling good. I highly recommend this book.

The Apple Of My Eye was a fantastic book to read. The writing style of the author kept me so engaged of a beautifully well written book about family, excitement and love. If you're look for a feel good book that will make you smile, I strongly urge you give this book a chance.

An excellent guidebook

This is essentially a rewrite of a book Lawson and Gary LaFontaine wrote a few years ago on fishing the Henry's Fork. If you have that one you really don't need this one. However, It's a very entertaining read, and if you don't have the older book and want to fish the Henry's Fork, this would be a very good book to have.

Lawson is THE authority on HF for Fly fishermen. The text and pix are accurate, particularly on locations and fly selection. Based on the book I retained guides for 2 days from Lawson's HF Anglers and fished the Box Canyon and Harriman Ranch sections of HF very successfully . Great fun !

Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more. When Liz isn't writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. When is book three coming!!?!!

I received this as an ARC.

Another amazing story by Liz Schulte! I love this woman. Her books have a way of sucking me in so that the rest of the world disappears around me. This book is the second in her Easy Bake Coven series. You can read my review of the first book, Easy Bake Coven, at Identity Discovery Blog.

Book one ends with Cheney and Selene taking over the throne of the Elves. Selene is a half elf, so this appears to be something that is going to cause a problem among the Elf race. The only part that seems ok is that Cheney is a full blooded elf and the heir to the throne. He over threw his father because he tried to banish Cheney for marrying a half elf. Cheney and Selene have decided that it is time for change among the Fae, allowing all the fae races to have some kind of say in how their world is run, including those that are half human. However, we are also introduced to Jaron in the final scene who informs Selene that she has been doing great and the plan is going exactly as planned. Selene also has a memory that involves kissing Jaron, leaving Selene wondering if she really is following some grand plan that she doesn't even remember.

Book two introduces us to Selene regaining her memories throughout the story. These memories leave her feeling even more confused about how she feels about Cheney or Jaron. It also has her wondering why she doesn't remember anything about her cousin that apparently she had been very close with. To top it off, Selene's human ex-fiance Michael is kidnapped, her yoga studio burned to the ground, she finds out she has been cursed, her grandma thinks she killed her parents, and Cheney is acting very weird. She doesn't know who to trust or what to do. It's a big mess that does get cleaned up pretty nicely by the end of the story. There are still questions left unanswered, which I believe are leading to what will happen in book three. It's a fantastic story and I want more!

Cute--but not as good as the first one

First--I enjoyed the first book in this series. It was a light, entertaining read, and aha! By an author I hadn't discovered before. All systems go.

I enjoyed this second book, too, for the most part. It picked up pretty quickly from the first book, and we got to see many of the characters from the first book--who are interesting enough that I'll probably read the other books by this author to hear about where they end up (incidentally, there are a lot of attractive single people in this series--so if you decide to read them, get settled in, as they smack of followups--which isn't necessarily a bad thing! Though once in a while, it would be worth a laugh to see the only single person being a bit of a creep or hunchback or something, just to throw a wrench in the whole "meet my gorgeous ensemble cast--stay tuned for lots more love and lust!").

**SPOILERS FOLLOW!!**

In any event. The plot picked up from the previous book, and seemed to be chipping along. Selene was starting to get her memories back, which was definitely an interesting plotline. But things got a little haywire, to be honest. I liked that not all her memories were real; that was a nice twist. BUT.

a) I don't like it when main characters in romances start to screw around with other characters. When Selene was "retrieving her memories," I felt a little angry with her (just didn't like that she jumped right on Jaron's explanation); and was downright annoyed at her kissing some jinn in a bar to help a friend get in a fight (it seemed a little juvenile/stupid). But hey, that's my preference--I just don't like the dabbling with other dudes concept.

b) What did Michael ever do? Seemed too random to bring him back into it. How does Jaron even know about this guy? And if he did know about him, wouldn't he know that Selene had long since kicked him to the curb? It felt like someone needed to get offed and he was handy, and that was about it.

c) It just felt...off. I can't really explain it, but this book, though cute, just didn't have the same charm as the first one. I don't know why, but I couldn't get as into it as the other. Cheney seemed a little whiny (though I thought he sometimes was in book 1, too), and Selene's waffling back and forth started to kind of get on my nerves. (Side note: I think some of Selene's bad-assery could be better described. I like the gifts/powers that Schulte has come up with, but I do think that when she uses them, they could be fleshed out better. It sometimes seems the "action" moments are over too quickly.)

I'm going on to the third one in this series next, and noticed there is a free download of the Guardian book 1 available, so will try that, too (I'm pretty curious about Olivia and Holden's story--damn you, Schulte! Sucking me in with your attractive ensemble of singles...).

This is the second book in the series. READ THE FIRST ONE FIRST! This is another series that is in the same world as Liz Schulte's Guardian series. I loooooved it. The fact that it was in the same world, so we go a taste of the Guardian series, but it was an entirely different story line was fantastic. It is a quick read so be prepared to devour it. Selene's life is completely flipped when she learns the truth about her past. She has so many struggles, internally and externally, that you can't help but feel for her. This book is written extremely well. The characters are fantastically developed. I found myself wanting to be part of her group of friends and the character Cheney completely threw me for a loop. I wanted Selene to jump into his arms and run away into the sunset, yet, later, I wanted her to beat the crap out of him. Read this book. It is worth it! Happy reading! :)

Learning to fly never sounded so good.

I was drawn in right from the start, I felt I was there experiencing what the characters were dealing with. Their fear mingled with a twist of romance complelled me to keep reading. One of my favorite lines is when Josh is sizing up having to stay in the cabin all night with cat he thinks to himself, "The only thing missing was the satisfied expression he knew would be there after a night spent making love with him." I knew then he wanted to see it. And so did I. The relationship between Cat and Josh take as many twists and turns deepening the mystery and increasing the fear caused by threatening actions of who ever is out to take them out. The plot grows deeper as they continue on a path looking for a solution and a way to bring an end to thier constant running. Josh has one more problem as he and Cat's relationship stregthens, he knows what happen to Cat's parents and he feels responsible. Fun and humorous when you least expect it, sexy and exciting, with real fear as they fight for thier lives and thier love, I loved this book from start to finish.

Great, fast-paced read!

Josh and Cat hooked me early. This is exactly the sort of fast-paced read I love to escape into. Excellent blend of action and romance with just enough humor thrown in. Best of all, I got my *SPOILER ALERT* happily ever after, which was just what I needed. A very satisfying read :)

Facing Fear with Flight

Facing Fear with Flight...Favorite new romantic suspense series I have come across recently where the plotline is fast action with a very good romantic suspense. I wonder if the author worked as a CIA or FBI agent or as a detective investigator?
This is a terrific read with some fast moving plotlines, love the main charactors and you will enjoy the twists and turns of how the two characters lives cross paths in secret history. What is going to happen next to them running with fear, but determined to stay hidden long enough to find out who is hunting them and why.
Have read three books from Author Sandy Loyd and all have been great romantic reads with twists of humor and suspenseful plotlines. Heroines are strong woman, overcoming adversity...my review is a

doesn't disappoint!

First time in a long time I have had the opportunity to sit and read and read I have. Devoured both stories today and hungry for more! Have never been disappointed with a Jaquie D'Alessandro story to date...I'm a sucker for love and happy endings and a bit of drama in the middle doesn't hurt at all! great read every time.

2 perfect, happiness inducing short stories

Jacquie D'Alessandro is one of my favorite Regency writers and I'd been missing her, so recently picked up Red Roses Mean Love, consuming it (not for the first time) with great relish. Afterwards I went looking for something else of hers and found this bundle, which I bought and forgot. (I just don't usually like contemporaries; so her more recent occupations were of no help.) Today, again looking around for something to read, this turned up. Sheer Delight!! It was quite the surprise, first off, to recognize Callie all grown up, then suffer through the "innocent" machinations (aka remarks) of Aunt Olivia. And William is lovely. (If you've read Red Roses Mean Love, it will be icing on "Heart's Desire", but is in no way necessary to appreciating the story.) After a short break, I couldn't resist carrying on with "At Last", which is every bit as good. These are perfect romance short stories with a compelling history deftly blossoming into the present moment in which the final (and really only) impediment to HEA is lovingly breached. The remarkable effect is almost of reading these characters' full novels; the characters are fully drawn, the problem believable, but not insurmountable. One couldn't ask for better and what a lift for a dreary afternoon.

I loved both of these stories, but I wish thy were full length novels. Great story lines, just not enough words! I wanted to hear more about these characters.

Good book, bad product placement

As the reviews show, readers rate the book very high or very low, and I think the low ratings have more to do with expectations than with the quality of the book. This book is only marginally a mystery, and certainly not a cozy! It's a paranormal western. Yet the cover looks like a cozy's, the back-cover blurb could describe a paranormal cozy (very popular genre at the moment), and it is being recommended in lists of cozies. This does a disservice to readers and to the author, because in its correct genre, it's very good. The paranormal aspect is a bit over the top--I prefer a more straightforward ghost story--and this is definitely not for someone looking for a regular mystery, or western, and unwilling to suspend disbelief. But the paranormal is not the only thing in the book. The main character is my kinda Old West gal, who wears trousers, takes a drink on occasion, stands up for herself against anyone (human or otherwise), and swears copiously (but only in French). The main male character is a bit stereotypical, the tough loner with a tragic past, but I hope for development in future books in the series. The descriptions of the post-Civil War West, especially Dodge City, are vivid and (in my amateur enthusiast's opinion!) accurate. There are a lot of details that aren't fully explored--I would have liked more about the ghost girl, whose murder is the only "murder mystery" aspect of the book, and there is a briefly met character who disappears dramatically and is never heard of again. P.S. The "cannibalism" others refer to isn't really, as those eating human flesh aren't actually human!

Not a cozy by any means

This is more a paranormal science fiction western. The book sounded good from the previews but was not at all as I expected. With humans turning to wolves and a demon to take on, add in cannibalism and it was not enjoyable. Very wordy and weird.

Fine work from a fine writer, with a new, wonderful character

Forging new territory in the western genre isn't easy. Books and movies have hit the trail a million times, and although we always love a return to the old form, but finding a work that strikes out in a direction, and pumps life into the genre is like finding buried treasure. Max McCoy's OF GRAVE CONCERN is that kind of find. By combining the straight-ahead western, with the paranormal mystery, McCoy has created a new genre, with a great central character in smart, eccentric, and funny Ophelia Wylde. I've read McCoy's other westerns, and even some of his INDIANA JONES novels. He knows how to lay-out action, pitting violent men against each other with the best of them. But OF GRAVE CONCERN shows a different side to his writing, taking us on a winding, supernatural journey with Ophelia, as she dives into the solving of a murder mystery that the tin stars can't handle. There's a wonderful hint of Conan Doyle here, and Ophelia Wylde could be the Sherlock Holmes of the West. As always, McCoy keeps his backgrounds true, and the real West - the real history - is always just a few feet away from his characters; something we feel on every page. I could just give a fan's "thumb's up" to OF GRAVE CONERN, but the fact is, this is a really terrific read - and when Ophelia returns, I want to be there.
