The emphasis is on multiple camera television, although serious considerations is given to single camera production in those formats where single camera production is the predominant production technique (i.e., documentaries and commercials/PSAs). The material in the book comes from the author's own experience in the industry and in university settings. Finding that students are adept at handling equipment but often lacking in actual production technique, this text addresses what outlines are needed by whom and why; how to mark a script; what a rehearsal agenda ought to be, and more. This approach to television production, which outlines the demands of each format, gives the students the tools they need to help them direct and produce efficiently in a variety of settings.

About the Author
Ivan Cury is a professor in the Communication Department of California State University, Los Angeles, where he has taught for the past fifteen years. He is also a producer and director of commercials, sitcoms, variety shows, documentaries, and daytime dramas such as The Young and the Restless. He has served as a judge for the Emmy's ACE and for the DGA awards. Before joining the department at Cal State, he taught for eleven years in the MPTV department at UCLA.

Easy to read and broad in its focus

First and perhaps most important, this book is easy to read. It doesn't talk about technical things, but instead goes right to the heart of the matter: what you have to know if you're going to direct or produce a program. It also covers a broad range of shows--almost every format except sports and game shows. For the most part it describes multiple camera television directing, but that's used as a basis for understanding single camera TV. And there are chapters in which single camera television plays a significant role, most notably when Cury goes into documentary and PSA directing. I particularly liked the "who's who" at the facility, which covers the functions of those who work in television--from the executive producer to talent.

Very clear and precise for the unexperienced tv professional

As a first time TV show co-producer, I wanted a simple approach on learning the basics of TV directing and producing. This book has given me everything I needed to start understanding the technical aspects of the business. Now I can express my ideas more clearly to the show director and the crew, and even though this is not my primary career this book has made easier my introduction in the business.

Best option after hands on with Ivan himself

Ivan Cury also taught courses in Directing for TV at UCLA and UCLA Extension.
My short time with him as a student in that curriculum prepared me as almost no other schooling has. The book not only features a condensation of his best advice but also a series of mind excercises one must bring to the craft in order to keep up. All of this is in addition to the typical textbook description of the directing environment, complete with extensive descriptions of who's who in the studio and in the control room.
Although the book concentrates mostly on the multi-camera environment, Cury applies the right mix of film style production instruction as well.
Ivan Cury's sections about budgeting and dealing with crews are invaluable and the step by step guides leave no questions unanswered.
Cury lays out the ropes and the laws of the land in easy to digest and logical bites, and instead of centering chiefly on the tools, his course concentrates on the creative palette and the canvas in the mind of the director, although this latest edition brings even the seasoned journeyman an update on the latest trends in digital video.
Cury makes sure that the inexperienced beginner knows what to expect in the production setting.

Outside of attending one of Cury's courses in person I give this book my highest recommendation.

Reveals how federal government heavy-handedness is not new.

This fascinating book describes events in Maryland just prior to and during the War Between the States. It focuses on thecharacter of the State and the political climate of the time in contrast to so many other Civil War books that simply rehashtroop movements and military tactics. Although Dr. Talbert's book is thoroughly documented with extensive footnotes and somewhat scholarly, he still managed the distinct achievement of writing in a very readable style that tells a story which is difficult to put down -- even though we may already know theoutcome. Modern political correctness has obscured from memory many of the events that took place in Maryland. Dr. Talbert, however, brings them together and provides a record which preserves the facts for posterity. He covers many fascinating facts and stories which together paint a clear picture of an unequivocally Southern State that was denied its will. I'm Glad Someone Out There Still Cares About the Truth

As an ancestral native of Talbot County, on Maryland's own Eastern Shore, I'm proud that we still have people like Bart Talbert out there defending our status as a Southern state. In my travels throughout the deeper South, I've often had to defend my accent and my heritage against those who view Maryland natives as "Northerners." It's sad that more people, particularly the young, seem to have no interest in the history of their people that is continually being erased. There is overwhelming evidence that Maryland would have thrown her lot with the Confederacy, had not Linclon's unconsitutional military occupation and a traitorous governor entered into the fray. Of course, it didn't help matters any that Maryland is geographically separated from the rest of the South by a very large bay. There was also the wholly unconstitutional election for Maryland's new governor, where votes for the Southern candidate were disqualified, and the mass imprisonment of politicians and prominent citizens who dared defy the Tyrant. In any case, Talbert presents good, albeit brief evidence here of what the truth really is. I would also recommend that readers explore other historical works on the subject like "Maryland and the Confederacy", by Harry Wright Newman, and a "Southern Star for Maryland", by Lawrence M. Denton. It pains me greatly that this book, and the two others I've mentioned, are all out of print. I've heard that Bart Talbert is now back in Maryland and teaching within the state's university system, and I can only hope that the knowledge he's capable of passing on to students there is appreciated by them and not lost.

The most important book of which I am aware, concerning Maryland's history and role in the War Between The States.

I gave this book a five-star rating only because Amazon.com would not allow me to give it six.

I've met so many Marylanders who don't see themselves as having a Southern heritage. Their reading this book would reveal a completely different history than what they (all of us, in fact) have been taught to believe about their people and their state. Surely, it would give them a wholly different view of the historical identity of their ancestors and, thereby, themselves.

I think that the most crucial factors surrounding the suppression of the basic human rights of the Marylanders of 1861, with the sole purpose being to prevent their secession, was not only because their having seceded would have surrounded Washington, D.C. by a seceded Virginia and a seceded Maryland, but their having seceded would have most probably led to the secession of Delaware and possibly other states in the area.

This is a MUST-HAVE book for anyone who has an interest in the truth concerning the war and the role played by Maryland, but also for the person interested in the history and identity of the people of the great state of Maryland.

On April 19, 1775, the “shot heard ‘round the world” was fired at Lexington, officially starting the Revolutionary War between the colonists and the British Empire. Though Lexington and Concord were the scenes of the first fighting, contingency plans had been made on both sides for war, and immediately after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the colonial militia men who had poured in from across the countryside converged on Boston, which at the time was a peninsula with a small neck attaching it to the rest of Massachusetts. With the Charles River surrounding it on three sides, Boston was an ideal city to lay siege to.

Initially, the militias blocked off the land approaches to Boston, but when 4,500 more British soldiers arrived by sea, the American forces fell back to adjacent hills on the Charlestown Peninsula, Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill. At this time, the colonists and colonial forces were still unclear of their ultimate goals; the Second Continental Congress would not formally declare independence for another year.

During the first few months of the fighting, the British tried on several occasions to lift the siege with force, and the most memorable attempt was what became known as the Battle of Bunker Hill. On June 17, 1775, the British Navy fired on Charlestown from the Charles River and then landed an estimated 3,000 British regulars on the peninsula. The British soldiers attempted multiple charges against about 1,500 defenders who were fairly well entrenched on Breed’s Hill, one of the hills behind Charlestown, and it took three attempts to force the colonists back to Cambridge. The British suffered a heavy price, losing over 1,000 British soldiers killed or wounded, compared to only 450 casualties for the colonists, who had stood toe to toe with the vaunted redcoats until ammunition ran low.

Bunker Hill would end up being the bloodiest battle of the entire Revolutionary War, and it had a critical impact on the morale of what would become the Continental Army and the ultimately successful siege of Boston. Given its importance, the battle remains well known among all Americans, and perhaps not surprisingly some of the myths and legends surrounding the battle and its participants remain the best known aspects of the fighting.

I love history so much, especially the Civil War and whenever I see anything that is about that period of time, I grab it very quickly. Nice short book with lots of good information.

A Good Effort - perhaps

It may be the nature of this series - I've only read a few - but if you're looking for a contextual understanding of this famous military engagement, look for something else. On the positive side, you WILL find a few constructive maps of the battle, several VERY nice primary document letters, brief to fair references about the lives/actions of individual American/British soldiers/generals and fascinating material regarding the life/death of American patriot Dr Joseph Warren. On the negative side, it is difficult to understand the book's intended audience. Beyond it's aspiration to be "history for kids"- the length puts it beyond the picture book category, while the language seems to "talk down" to middle grade students. In sum, despite the fact that some interesting details can be gleaned and used to augment presentations by classroom teachers, the Battle of Bunker Hill barely pushes my rating to one star.

Lee as a great commander; history or myth

I read this book as part of preparation for a lecture i was doing on Lee as a general. My issue based on a lot of study was with the claim that Lee was the greatest general in American history, which I do not accept. He was a great leader of men, and loved by his men but in my opinion was lacking in certain areas as an army commander. Connelly focuses on the Lee image that was created as part of the southern Lost Cause mythology. While interesting it did not address the primary military command questions to my satisfaction.

Grady McWhinery's "Attack and Die" was far more relevant to my interest.

I made some of the recipes in this book and absolutely loved how they came out. I am cooking for one person and find that I will be able to freeze some or share when the grandkids come over. Very easy on the budget too.

A very innovative book with plenty of both sweet and savoury ideas for many types of occasion.
These also can be quick and happily, there need only be 2 dishes to wash up with a few utensils -everyone`s favourite way to cook!
This way of cooking has stimulated my imagination and gives a much needed boost to boring old mealtimes and enables quick and lazy cooking.
Family and guests will love the new `deli` approach to catering.

2nd in the Series

My favorite characters in the Rose Harbor series are Jo Marie (the widow running the B & B ) and Mark Taylor (the prickly handyman). In each book the rose garden he has promised to help her with seems further away. This time around, he suffers a broken leg which puts them in closer contact than either wants.

The Rose Harbor books always have storylines involving guests staying at the inn. One of the storylines this time didn't really catch my interest but the one of the feuding couple celebrating their 50th anniversary made up for it.

There was also a sideline as to whether Jo Marie's husband could have survived the helicopter accident.

Some regulars from the Cedar Cove series showed up again - it was like meeting up with old friends.

And Debbie Macomber always leaves a hint as to who the next two guests will be. It makes you anxious for the next book, that's for sure.

When I was considering how I would review this book, I was shocked to realize that I would give it 3 stars. I love, love, love, Debbie Macomber's books, but not this one so much.

In this book, it seems like she fell back to a formula - again and again: Woman has a major emotional problem; man pushes woman into relationship with him; they end up happy. And, whenever someone is emotional during a conversation, they whisper a reply. Every. Single. Time. It's a small thing, but it drove me crazy.

However, I read the entire book. I am not someone who feels compelled to read a book if I am not enjoying it. Life is too short and there are too many books. Despite the problems I had with the book, I still was drawn into the characters and the story lines. I like the main character Jo Marie Rose and the women who stay at her B&B are interesting. The men tend to be a little less well developed, more one-dimensional.

I am hoping that the next book in the series will be better. I seem to remember reacting like this to a book in her last Cedar Cove series and subsequent books were better.

Book two of the series okay but predictable

I liked the book two new characters and their story lines. I didn't like all the going back to book one, sometimes pages and pages...I'm thinking by book five the entire book may be a tie-in novel. I do know this series will determine if I will read series books going forward. I am glad that the Paul story is considered complete, enough said so as not to write a spoiler in my review. I like that Dave's character has softened some too, I hope we'll learn more about him in book three. Speaking of, it's back to Rose Harbor book three for me.

Mira is Brilliant, On Topic and a Great Science Resource for Kids!

The next free promo download for Coral Reefs is March 4th but, seriously, for $2.99, why wait?

I was so excited when I received an email from the author, Monika Mira about her newly released book, Coral Reefs since falling in love with her children's books a few weeks ago when I first reviewed Hawaii's Green Sea Turtles. I have to say, just like the last book, I, and my kids are mesmerized by the images in these books and the way Mira makes science fun!

Everything you have ever wanted to know about Coral Reefs is in this book. What are they? Are they dead or alive? Do they eat? Where can you find them? Why are they important? What kind of creatures are found in coral reefs? What's a Nudibranch? So Cool! And, finally, what are the main threats to Coral Reefs, why do we care and how can we help? Answers to all of these questions and MANY more! The book even includes a glossary with links from the terms within the text to the glossary for further explanation. Overall, the book is extremely informative for someone interested in learning more about Sea Life, doing a book report or just sharing educational stories with their children. The images, as I expected, were beautiful and true to life photographs! I just love Mira's style!

Beautifully illustrated and very educational

I needed no encouragement to read a third marine book by Monika Mira (see also Fun Fish Facts for Kids and Hawaii's Green Sea Turtles): this time, along with some spectacular photography, she tells us all about coral reefs. Along with the fascinating facts, she stresses the urgency of its preservation and how we can, with just a little thought, all help with this goal.

Monika’s books are aimed at teaching middle-school children about what goes on at the bottom of the sea. And she does it well. As with all her books, Coral Reefs is concise, but clear, and very informative. I certainly learnt a lot. So, I now know what a coral reef is, how it feeds, who lives on it (illustrated by stunning photos of the beautifully coloured fish and patterned molluscs), and its importance. Monika lays out the threats to the existence of coral reefs and then the simple environmental measures we can take to protect them.

It’s always a pleasure to read and learn with Monika. Her books have a valuable place on the bookshelf.

Excellent for young inquisitive readers; fabulous photos

This book brings alive the whole world under the surface of the ocean. With fabulous, colorful photos, children -- and adults -- can learn about coral reef systems and all the animals that live in, on and around reefs in our oceans. More academically inclined children will appreciate the detail Monika provides and that she doesn't "dumb down" concepts for those who want to learn.

Imagine seeing for the first time how a coral reef looks when it's healthy, what an eel or a clownfish look like and learning about their lives! This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to experience worlds that normally only scuba divers and marine biologists get to see - and you can do it from the comfort of your own home.

I enjoyed immensely looking at the photos, reading the description of each sea creature, then viewing each photo again. I feel like I came to know so much more about coral reefs and their denizens of the deep from this book.
