Almost like the book version of "Once Upon A Time" Show.

Peter Pain is a cool name, and I really liked the cover because the symbol is like a tattoo. I downloaded the book because I like the idea of Peter Pan as a bad guy. Also there are going to be NINJA-PIRATES. Who doesn't want to read about that??? However, there are 2 parts in the book - with 2 voices. First you are in the head of Peter, who sounds a little psycho. He really wants to find the kids from his past - especially Wendy, but he can't find her. So now he feels time is running out to save himself from...???

The main plot is about a 15 year old girl who really hates her life and wants to run away. She hates her Aunt, who is a grade-a-b**** who abuses her, is stealing the girl's money and forcing her to do chores. Sorta reminds me of a modern day Cinderella theme. Anyway, after having some weird dreams, the girl ends up in the Never-WORLD - different from the more familar Neverland and everything goes crazy. She meets fairies, gets kidnapped by kids who want to kill her, and jumps from one dangerous situation to another.

The story has decent pacing, awesome illustrations, and I like the two main characters. Some issues though:

(1) I want a little more of Peter. He's more bad-ass and as I guy, I want to hear more about him, but since the focus is on Beth finding him, there are only a few chapters devoted to the guy.

(2) The book ends on a cliff-hanger - right when Beth and Peter meet. I know it's only Part 1 so I assume the rest of the story is about their adventures together.

My favorite part is the color comic at the end showing Peter going crazy and flying off. I wish there was more pages of the illustrations.

All in all, I think I will really like the plot more if it didn't stop so abruptly. It felt like similar the that show on ABC - Once Upon A Time. So I feel this story really has potiental and I hope the second part comes out soon.

A new, great series!

The elements of a fine adventure are all in place in this new series aimed at young readers. Beth, a descendant of Wendy Darling, lives in Atlanta with a cruel aunt who abuses her. I do not want to give too much of the story away, but I found it to be finely crafted with remarkable, interesting characters. The illustrations are a nice touch, and I think this series will be a huge hit.

Great twist on a classic story!

Peter Pain is a fun twist to a classic story. It starts off a little slow but C.A. Alexander does a fantastic job developing Beth's character throughout the beginning. After establishing the characters it starts to get really exciting when Beth finally goes to the Never world where Alexander's writing really begins to shine as she pulls you into this other world. I would definitely recommend this book to any adolescent and even adults who enjoy fantasy and the classic story of Peter Pan. Can't wait for the next book to come out!

Whatever type is to be designed, the general criterions
do not vary. Usually the designer can select the type of
engine from a more or less vast series; often though, the
type of motor is imposed and that naturally limits the
fields of possibility.
Rather than exposing the abstract criterion, it is more
interesting to develop summarily in this and the following
chapters, the general outline of a project of a given type
of airplane, making general remarks which are applicable
to each design as it appears. In order to fix this idea,
let us suppose that we wish to study a fast airplane to be
used for sport races.

Good instructions... a bit dated.

The designs and instructions were well detailed. It's obviously a bit dated, but the aeronautical engineering is sound and the explanations cogent. Enjoyed it a lot. Now, if my garage was big enough, I'd go build myself a nice little biplane.

Old Book With Lots of Good Information and Awful Formatting

This book is actually "Airplane Design and Construction" by Erich Hartfield. It is a very old book, but it has a ton of great information and diagrams.

The book is divided into four parts. The first three sections are about the structure of the airplane and how different design considerations for the various structural elements will affect the flight characteristics of the airplane. There are lots of illustrations, diagrams, charts, and formulas.

The final section is about the "Design of the Aircraft". This section contains a mix of outdated information in the section about materials with other good information about determining flight characteristics, static analysis, etc.

This book is not in text. It is a compilation of scanned images of the pages. Each page displays with a large margin and big empty column on the right side. You can click and zoom to make it larger, but it has to be done on each page. With better formatting this book would get 5-stars.

Fifteen-year-old Carlene's brother went missing three years before she was born, and although he is presumed dead, their mother has never abandoned hope of finding him. When a piece of evidence surfaces in Lake Isadora, where Keith disappeared, her mother moves back there with Carlene, setting up the premise for Littke's (Haunted Sister) exciting though not always well-executed mystery. When they arrive in Lake Isadora, something strange happens: Carlene experiences weird flashes of memory, even though she's never been there before, and soon learns that the memories belong to a woman who drowned in the lake the day Keith disappeared. Now Carlene, previously impatient with her mother's unreasonable hope, is the one who may be able to solve the mystery. A few character flourishes feel belabored (J.P., a small boy dumped by his parents, wears his dad's necktie every day), some minor plot points are left hanging and Carlene's narration is redundant at times. Even so, the lake, now evaporating to reveal the foundations of the old town (which was relocated), provides an appropriately haunting backdrop, and Carlene's resentment of her mother's absorption in her missing brother provides an interesting tension. The suspense builds as Carlene's "memory" of that day becomes clearer and keeps this story afloat. Ages 12-up.

Gr 7-9-Carlene's brother disappeared when he was four, long before she was born. Despite the official report of his drowning, her mother has never given up the hope that somehow, somewhere, he is still alive. When his clothes are found during some construction 18 years later, she decides to move back to the town where they lived to finally get the answers that she's been looking for. Once they arrive, Carlene feels a weird sense of d‚j… vu, even though she's never been there. Through a series of events, she realizes that she lived there in a past life. To uncover the circumstances of her brother's disappearance, the teen must investigate in both the present and the past. The question of reincarnation has been pondered by many. Littke gives the debate some extra spice by adding elements of suspense and mystery. Carlene is a likable, believable character whose struggle with the shadow of her brother, her relationship with her mother, and reincarnation as a concept is interesting and engaging. The ending is a little too easy, and, if you know what clues to look for, slightly predictable. Nonetheless, this title makes a good read, with fantasy, murder, and a little bit of romance mixed with a smidgen of teen angst, so it'll appeal to a wide audience.

Lake of Secrets Review

I read the book " Lake of Secrets" by Lael Littke. This book was a thrilling , page - turner about a family trying to find the story behind the death of their son/brother Keith who supposedly drowned in a tragic accident. In this story Keith's sister Carlene finds out what family means to her by helping her mom uncover the tragic past through memories of a victim who also died with Keith.

My favorite part of this book was when Carlene first meets J.P. at the local newspaper shop. That day Carlene was very upset because her mom told her that the reason she was born was to find Keith but when J.P. walked in the room some happiness poured over her. Soon after J.P. gave Carlene a tour of the town which slowly convinced her to accept that she was going to live their for the summer.

I have read a lot of mystery books but by far this is my favorite. To try and solve the mystery wi'll you read the book and then finding out what really happens is the best especially in this book when something unexpected occurs. I would recommend this book to people the age of 12+ because it can get confusing at points. Also, in some chapters it is a little sad which kids younger than 12 might not be able to handle. I would also recommend this book to people who love thrilling mystery books that take unexpected turns.

Lake of Secrets by Lael Littke was a really good book! I liked it because it pulled me in after every chapter. It also really had an awesome plot in it and a really surprising ending. Also when I was reading and I thought I could stop reading it drawled me right back in again. Lael really did a great job in creating this book and made it worth-while. This book causes you to feel like your in a different world and your actually with the character experiencing what the character is experiencing. Most books don't do that, but this book does it incredibly well. So over all I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes really great books!

Lake of Secrets by Lael Littke was a great book. The main character is Carlene. Her brother, Keith, went missing three years before she was born, and she lives with her mother. Carlene has cope with her Mom's longing to find her lost brother, and the fact that she believes he's still alive. They move to the town where he disappeared, forcing Carlene to leave her school and friends. After arriving, she has strange sensations and a feeling that she's been there before. After the deja vu continues, she talks to her Mom's friend Mariah, she realizes she lived as a woman named Elaine in a past life.

Elaine had died trying to save Keith from drowning. She knew there was a reason for these memories surfacing when she came to her new home. She also knew the recollections would lead to the real story of what happened to Keith, and whether he was dead or alive. Sights of different things around the town triggered the memories and she came to know the past live of the people. She turns to Elaine's husband and others to help her with solving the mystery of her forgotten brother's death. After her Mom's accident she decides to turn to someone to help her discover the truth.

In the end all of the questions are answered and Carlene and her Mom can live peacefully, knowing what happened to Keith on that tragic day, 18 years ago. I think the ending is a bit foreseen, but I would recommend reading it if you like mysteries. You can relate to the characters and understand them. I think this book has a twist of murder and romance to capture the interest of anyone who reads Lake Of Secrets.

Why bother with sed?

That's the first question that popped into my head when I saw this book.

Here's the funny thing, though: I DO use sed. Maybe not every day, but I doubt a week goes by that I don't use sed for something.

I don't use sed for anything complicated; for that I'd turn to Perl. I'd say that's a concept the author agrees with (though some of the examples in this book would cause me to start editing a Perl script instantly).

Let's get the praise out of the way first: this is the clearest and easiest to understand treatment of sed I have ever read. I can well remember my initial befuddlement from the sed "man" page thirty years ago and not feeling all that much more enlightened by O'Reilly's "Sed & Awk" quite a few years later. This book would have served me better.

But instead I learned Perl. Yet, because I knew how to do the simpler tasks in sed, those stuck with me. Perl can do the same sort of simple command line things, but I never learned that sytax because I had sed! I have to wonder: had I become more proficient with sed and awk, would I have taken up Perl so early?

I'm not sure that I can answer that question. I have an opinion that it's better to know all of it - sed, awk, Perl, vi, emacs, whatever: you never know what you might need to do and under what conditions you need to do it. I've been on systems where Perl was not installed or was broken; it was certainly helpful to have fall-back tools - clumsy as my scripts were, they did the job.

So - very well done. I'm not sure how many people will bother with it, but those that do will get their money's worth.

An excellent introduction to sed

This text provides an excellent coverage of GNU sed. I'd also recommend O'Reilly's sed&awk, but whereas that one focuses on POSIX sed, this text covers the GNU version, which is what most people are going to be using. GNU introduces a few new options and instructions that are not in POSIX and this book discusses those as well. Simple examples are provided for every concept discussed.

Best sed reference I've seen

Learning sed has always been a frustrating task, and I think that has been at least partially due to the lack of good references on the subject out there. Well, this book book seems to have solved that problem.

The author does a great job in covering all aspects of sed, and lays out the book in a well organized way. The best part of the book however is all of the examples the author uses. The author doesn't simply tell you how to use sed. He shows you, using numerous examples every step of the way. As someone who learns best by doing, this book had me using some of sed's advanced features in no time.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to learn sed, from experienced sed users who want to master its advanced features to people who have never used the tool before.

Fuming from a failed community on the outskirts of Charleston, Timothy's biological father, Ray, born angry and consumed with jealousy, aims his revenge at his parents' fortune and vows to destroy Timothy's ideal life with mental and physical abuse. A bigot and a womanizer, he launches twisted schemes of embezzlement and murders, camouflaged as suicides that take the lives of prominent Charlestonians.
Timothy, like his grandparents, struggles to escape Ray's relentless ruin and shrewd slaughter of others. At the same time, a secret society, deep within the invisible walls of Charleston, fights to steer Timothy's fate away from Ray's rage. But Timothy's fate is governed from the grave of his grandfather, Richard; a fate that no one can imagine.

Unable To Put Down

At least once in everyone’s life, a child, spouse, friend or acquaintance asks you to read something they wrote, hear a song they sing or look at something they painted. And then the words we all dread, “Tell me what you think of it and be honest”. Now we are caught in a moral turpitude, do we tell the truth or fib to spare their feelings. A few weeks ago a friend asked me to read a book he had just written and let him know what I thought. The book is “Unforgotten Sins In Charleston”.
As it turned out, I did not have anything to worry about. The best way I can think to describe this book is to compare it to a child’s book that when you open it, a 3D cut out of a dinosaur rises up. As you read Mr. Gordon’s book, the characters come alive and jump off the pages at you. Like a great painter. He has an uncanny ability to make the characters seem so lifelike, the colors so vibrant and smells so real that you are convinced are right there in the room.
From the very beginning you want to reach out and protect the protagonist, as any parent would do, while at the same time beating the boy's father to within a inch of is life.
The book portrays life in a Southern town in a time which had it good parts and other parts that it is hard for us to imagine in this day and age ever existed and should make us all feel a bit ashamed.
Mr Gordon draws you in and it is very difficult to put the books down. You want to skip ahead but feel if you miss the smallest detail, the loss will be yours.
I am thankful that I can truly say that it is one of the finest fictional novels that I have had the pleasure of reading.

UNFORGETTABLE!

Several of my friends were reading "Unforgotten Sins in Charleston" at the same time that I was reading it and we had daily "water cooler" discussions about it. I found that I enjoyed our discussions so much that on one hand I wanted to hurry and finish it but on the other hand I wanted to read it slowly and absorb all the details and make it last as long as possible. I loved the way the book kept my interest with the little teasers at the end of the chapters. I've always felt that Charleston was a special place to visit with it's wonderful historic buildings. The sights and smells of the area were described perfectly in the book. I honestly felt that I was there! As I read I found myself wishing that there were more people in this world like Timmy. People that work hard for their money, are courteous to everyone and find the good in life no matter what problems are thrown their way. It was a great jouney Jim Gordon.

Thanks for a Novel that was a Great Read and Needed

For what this book did for me, I wish I could give it a "million stars" review. Never have I read such a masterfully written novel that opened my eyes to the manipulations of sociopaths that enter and lurk in our lives to control and destroy us. Although a fictional novel, Jim Gordon III is a wonderful writer who graphically describes these horrible beings.

The demon in my life is so clear to me now. Unfortunately, I spent 18 years surviving traps set by the sociopath in my life, but somehow knew that I could better protect our children inside the marriage than out of it. Time has proven me correct.

The city of Charleston should be proud of this native writer that treasures his beloved Low Country. The author obviously experienced the area personally and without a doubt has insight into the personalities of the antagonists. His intricate detail of architecture, military protocol, and life in one of the South's most beautiful and complicated cities could only come from someone with a very personal perspective. He is an excellent writer with masterful use of language and colloquial expression.

Many of the actions of the characters seem almost unbelievable, but if you have ever been the target of a sociopath, you will relate. If you haven't, count your blessings. These people exist and they thrive on human destruction. They don't have family or friends and they stop at nothing to get what they want. They are masters of deception and any display of emotion is an act. They take hostages whom they isolate, make into victims and often, willing accomplices.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jim Gordon for his insight and willingness to write this book...and to my children, whose wisdom saw the truth long before I did.
