Second In The Series Sets Style

The Old Fox Deceiv'd, by Martha Grimes, is the second in the series of this exceptionally well writted series featuring Richard Jury and Melrose Plant. The reparte between the two primary characters and their growing friendship is really the best part of this series. If you are new to the series, than congratulations... you have found an excellent series by a very witty and gifted author. Some of the books - like any series - are much better than others. In this novel, the style of having Melrose essentially sent on assignment is made, with excellent results. Reading along as Melrose plays jr. detective is very funny. The mystery here is just nifty enough to make this a 4 star read. For those of you new to the series, here are the books in order:

Curry and Grimes a winning combination

A beautiful woman lies dead, her blood covering her party costume, and smearing her Harlequin face paint. She is a stranger, so not only do people wonder who killed her, but why kill a stranger? Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jury and his pal Melrose Plant are sharing a pint at the local pub The Old Fox Deceiv'd, when this came swirling with danger and deception touches them. Foxes are abound - the pub carries one in the name, Jury and Melrose find the only way to trap a foxy
killer is to ride to the foxes.
It's typically Grimes all the way, the humor dry and droll, and brought to life by the ever-so-talent Tim Curry. I just cannot imagine anyone but Curry reading Grimes. He brings all the characters to life. While my preferred medium is reading in print, I cannot resist all the Curry-Grimes tapes. They are just too perfect!
If you love British Mysteries, you cannot pass on these tapes. If you are a Curry fan, you simply need to hear him doing Aunt Agatha and Gwendolyn! This was the second in the Jury-Plant series.

More Plant, Please!

Anticipating more of the humor and eccentricities that characterized the first in this series, The Man with a Load of Mischief, I was disappointed to find much of it missing in this second book, The Old Fox Deceiv'd. The plot is as intelligent and intriguing as all of Grimes' stories in the Richard Jury series, but I prefer it balanced with the charm and delightful characterizations of the denizes of that English village Long Piddleton. While Richard Jury is Grimes' hero in this series, the character of Melrose Plant is the one that makes me keep returning to these books for more.

All the world's a stage...

It's 1664 and Puritan Penitence Hurd arrives from America armed with nothing but her faith, a bag filled with wampum and tobacco and the address of her long lost aunt. The address takes her to the Cock and Pie on Dog Street, a brothel with a Madame who goes by the moniker of "Her Ladyship". Told that her aunt is long gone and most likely dead and with no where else to go Penitence accepts a position as seamstress as Her Ladyship is surprisingly reluctant to allow her to whore like the others. Plague soon breaks out and all on Dog Street are quarantined in their homes to catch it and die or survive the forty days and be freed. Penitence's room is across the way from room rented by the mysterious Henry King and they strike up a strange friendship as Henry teaches her to use The Vizard Mask to become someone else and thus lose her terrible stutter As the plague loosens its hold Henry and Penitence share one night of passion before he gains his freedom and disappears from her life.

Fate has a few unfortunate surprises for Penitence (pregnancy, Newgate, illegal pamphlet printing to name a few) and many times the only way to get past it is the oldest way in the world, but she will do anything to keep her independence. Once she sees the glitter and magic of the King's Theater she is determined to beat the odds and make it - although when she crosses one of King Charles' rowdy noblemen and he strikes back she's willing to give up her freedom for royal protection (no it's not who you are thinking it is). As she settles into a safe, albeit boring life with her royal protector, Penitence gets a shock when Henry King once again drops into her life and his name is not Henry King.......

That's as far as I'm going, if you want to know more then read it for yourself. Penitence's story begins just before the Great Plague of London through to the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion and it's aftermath to the coronation of William and Mary. Fans of Charles Stuart be warned, he does not come off looking too pretty in this one, he's portrayed at his rutting, double dealing worst here.

At times very witty and bawdy with lots of laugh out loud moments makes this a fast fun read, but there are some very difficult moments as well - keeping her son hidden and to safety after the failed Monmouth rebellion will have you on the edge of your seat, as well as the descriptions of the Bloody Assizes after the failed rebellion. That said there are times when the pace dropped off and got a bit tedious (the plague went on waaaaaay too long, as well as that last bit at the end trying to get ______ buried in Poet's corner *yawn*). Even with the flaws I enjoyed it a lot, and most especially when Penitence and Henry were in the same room - some of the best banter I've come across in a long time. Four stars.

American readers are missing a good bet

I can't help but wonder where U.S. lovers of historical fiction are when it comes to Diana Norman's very readable, but highly literate novels. Although the plot of The Vizard Mask has some parallels to that of her A Catch of Consequences, that was of no consequence to me; this was still a great and original read. I'm just about through its 700 pages and dreading the end of this fast-paced adventure. Through this story of a New England Puritan girl who returns to England, I've found myself transported back to the era of the plague, the London fire, the excesses of the court during the Restoration, and more.

I can't get enough of Diana Norman's novels, as well as her 12th century mysteries written under the pseudonym Ariana Franklin. Unfortunately, many of her earlier novels are out of print and expensive, and I had to get this one through an interlibrary loan.

A gritty and gripping story. Excellent!

After finding out that Ariana Franklin was Diana Norman, and that there were to be no more of her wonderful "Mistress of the Art of Death" books coming, I went looking for her earlier works. I am so VERY glad that I did! After joyously devouring her Makepeace Hedley books (which are also excellent), I dove into The Vizard Mask. And I have to say that it may be the very best of all of them so far! Just as she did with Adelia in "Mistress of the Art of Death", and Makepeace in "A Catch of Consequence" and the following books, Diana Norman created a wonderfully engaging and real Penitence Hurd to be at the center of this excellent book. How irresistible! An early American Puritan thrown into the stews of London during the Restoration! And smack into a brothel, at that!

I must add that I am not normally a reader of historical fiction. (Unless you count "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell", which also could easily claim several other genre labels...) But, as with ALL of the Diana/Ariana Norman/Franklin books, the historical aspects never get in the way of a great human drama.

In addition to being an absolute page-turner, filled with poignancy and humor, the book also gives us an inside look at the horrifying plight of women in these earlier centuries. And yet it manages to do that without ever getting preachy or depressing. Having finished the book, I am reluctant to start another - I don't expect to find anything that measures up to it anytime soon.

Take two.

I loved reading the first novel, so I was thrilled to continue on and read part two. The story was entertaining, however like other reviewers have suggested, certain repeated actions did become a little stale. Although, I still feel that overall The Problem of Getting Rich Quik ... part two was worth the read. I would have liked the author to expand on Lilly's abductions in longer process to build up more suspense to the mystery of John's stability.

I look forward to reading more from S.M Mala.

A bit tiresome

I love love love this author!!! however, on part two, it became a bit tiresome. They were back and forth and back and forth and he took her back and she took him back and they fought and made up and fought and made up...and we all know, of course, where it will end. So I found myself anxious to 'get it over with'. But again, I LOVE this author's wit and writing!!

We met Rich and Lily in part one of The Problem of Getting Rich Quik. He couldn’t keep it in his pants and he was always going on at her that he loved her, but then would toss her out in the most hurtful and humiliating ways. And she was always taking him back because she would believe his declarations of love and repentance. I thought he was a jerk and she was a fool. I will say that in this book, he was on the up and up with her about himself and his philandering ways. And she was not likely to take his stuff. And they were older and wiser and were more honest with one another and themselves. But that doesn’t stop the outside influences from trying to come between them. And with Rich Quik, there were some MAJOR outside influences. And they didn’t just try to manipulate the situation. They decided they were going to physically remove Lily from his life, even if it had to be done permanently. In this, Lily HAD her backbone. She stood up and she fought for what she wanted and what she needed. Rich was a pansy. He refused to see the friends who were horrible until he saw it with his own eyes that one was willing to commit murder. And he still yet accepted that the other was just as treacherous, even through to the end. And so, I still don’t like his character. But by the end I did like Lily’s.

Ms. Mala’s two part books were interesting. It did have me worried in moments. It had me sad in moments. It had me angry in moments. And I would recommend it based on this book, because it shows a mighty huge character development from the first pages to the last.

This guy is a piece of crap and a narcissistic sociopath. He left a man to die just so he could "accomplish" the climb.

When asked he said the had not climbed halfway up the mountain just to save someone's life.

Real piece of work. This guy does not deserve to be remembered accept as an example of how disgraceful some people can be.

Double amputee tells an entertaining, funny and positive story of climbing Cho Oyu in 2004 and Everest North Face in 2006

After losing his legs below the knees to frostbite, Mark Inglis tells his day-by-day story of climbing Cho Oyu in 2004 and Mount Everest from the North in 2006, both with Russel Brice of HIMEX. He provides brief overviews of the structure of an expedition, Cheyne Strokes breathing, oxygen and altitude, the Everest north and south climbing routes, diarrhea, and mountain sickness. There are 16 pages of colour photos, 4 pages on Cho Oyu.

Inglis describes the daily life on an expedition including the mundane stuff like sleeping, eating, drinking beer, doing laundry, and using the toilet at high altitude. "Whisky with honey is the order of the day, though it's a beer for me after that as after one whisky I was just about legless - wrong, I was legless."

Inglis acclimitizes at Base Camp, Advanced Base Camp, and then climbs to Lake Camp and Camp 1. "Three steps before camp 1 I hear the dreaded 'ping', one of the two 'ankle joint' bolts shears and one of my feet goes seriously floppy. ... Ten minutes of work and the broken leg is fixed. Try doing that with bones, you guys. ... I'm now at 6350 metres. What an awesome place! I'm sorry if 'awesome', 'fantastic', 'amazing' seem to litter the text, but it really is that sort of place."

After spending nine days at Camp 1, Inglis starts for the summit on September 27, 2004, his 45th birthday. "After a few hours of climbing it flattens off to the summit plateau, a huge area the size of several football fields - so where the hell is the real top? Just follow the footprints, and sure enough, just after 8am we come to the streaming prayer flags that mark the summit. .. Look out Everest - I know damn well I can stand on your summit if you let me."

This book is a simply fun read. Mark Inglis writing is entertaining, funny, positive and direct. The photos are good.

A Classic children's book that I own both in Kindle and hardback version

I purchased this book (as well as all of the other Dr. Seuss books) as soon as they became available for the Kindle. It helped that there was a great promotional price at the time but the real motivator was to have them for my, at that time, infant grandson to read.

Fast forward a couple of years and I realized that while the Kindle version is great to have (especially when on-the-go), nothing really replaces having the actual book in hand for a toddler. My grandson is now almost three years old and can handle the delicate process of turning thin, paper pages. He loves to sit and “read” books to himself or to his baby sister. Because of this new realization, I have decided to pick up the books in this series in hardback format.

“Green Eggs and Ham” is one of the wonderful books I remember from my own childhood and I love the book's rhymes and illustrations. It was one of the Dr. Seuss books that I purchased and read to my children when they were young. We still have those old books but I gave them to my daughters when they moved away from home so they could keep an important piece of their childhood with them. I now get to have the opportunity to buy them again and enjoy reading them to a new generation.

This is my daughter's favorite book. Every night I ask which stories does she want me ti read--and this one always gets her vote. I now have to just do the choosing sometimes to get variation. My neighbors daughter is 8 years old and loves it too so its one of those books that just has universal appeal.

Not for babies/small toddlers

I got this thinking it would be great to read to my one year old and because it's a board book she couldn't rip pages. But though it is a board book, it has flip up tabs she can tear out. Really adorable and comes with peel and stick stickers would be great for an older child.

Statistical Pairs Trading, Short and Sweet

I enjoyed this volume, a quick presentation on pairs trading with some worked examples. I also like it for its ability to get to the point. First a disclaimer: I"m not a trader. However, I am interested in relationships between variables, as I work in statistical inference. because the book begins with Bayes' Theorem, a simple and powerful equation in probability, I was drawn to the subject to learn how others use Bayes in their fields.

Since many folks who trade stocks this way (pairs trading and related) are not formal statisticians, they rely on knowing a bit about goes on "under the hood" and then they drive using programs. This is not an exposition of the code or the programs' details, however. That said, I did enjoy their discussion about binary classification and the simple diagrams they used to show the power (or lack thereof, at times) of the basic algorithm. I also found their presentation of the key diagnostics, such as accuracy, true positive rate, and so on, to be clear and on the mark. The "confusion matrix" is readily recognized by statisticians as a simple contingency table, and so the following discussion is easy to read.

Electrical engineers will recognize the ROC curve. The authors avoid a lot of potential distractions by not diving into the details of receiver operating characteristics; better to simply label it, show it, and press. The extensive presentation on what different curves look like and what they mean, in a practical sense, is nicely done.

Since I have no intention of using this method for trading purposes, I cannot address the adequacy thereof. The apparent accuracy of the method, though, is impressive: 73.9% for one case, where a fair coin would be approximately zero. I hope to perform similar magic on predictive situations for my clients in manufacturing, and I'm thankful to have read this book.

For my tastes, the improvements the authors could make would include a glossary, a short but detailed exposition on how to get, install and test the basic programs, and a bit more balance between what works (or has worked) and what doesn't.

All in all, though, a nice pamphlet and good value.

The book requires programs you may not have.

I purchased this book because I am curious about pairs trading. I'm disappointed in this book because in order to get the most benefit from it one needs to have some familiarity with c programming, unix and AWK programming (information that wasn't provided chapter 2 of the book). Before purchasing the book, I downloaded the free sample that's available for the Kindle. I do this to see if the material requires software or specific knowledge that is outside of my education level. I certainly believe the author of the book should have put this crucial information either in the Disclaimer section or in Chapter 1.

Oh, by the way, the author's disclaimer states that the "results are based on simulated or hypothetical performance results that ...do not represent actual trading."

My disclaimer: I am not a professional trader, but I do trade options on a regular basis. Moreover, I am not a mathematician, but I have a relatively strong background in mathematics, having had courses in second year calculus and differential equations (but I took these about 40 years ago). I also have a minor in applied statistics. There is a chance that I misunderstood the information provided in the book. so, if that is the case, I apologize in advance.
