An Amazing Sequel

I wrote a review a while back about Elusive (On The Run Book #1), the first in this series. I have to say Secretive is as fast-paced and entertaining. I found myself reading late in the night wanting to know what was going to happen to Zoe and Jack. There were twist and turns in the story which I would not have thought of (and that is a good thing.)

This book picks up over six months from when Zoe finally made it home. Not much has gone well for her: she has a hole in the ceiling of her kitchen, is still trying to make ends meet, and there are still various men following her (given the only fact that she is Jack's ex-wife.) When the money from GRS (millions of dollars) is found to be missing from a frozen account watched by the FBI Zoe is the first on the list of people to interview. She is the only one presumably alive who still has any connection to the money.

She again has to travel overseas and find Jack in order to try and clear her name and his in the investigation. She meets some old friends and makes some new enemies in the process. Also, she finds herself in England, as well as Germany.

I loved this installment of On the Run series as much as the last one and cannot wait for the third book to come out. Rosett does a great job of reeling you in to the story and not letting you go until the very end (and then you still want to know what happens next.) I will admit this was not as good as the first book, but I have found that to be the case with most sequels.

Zoe and Jack Return- Here We Go Again

Secretive starts off six months after the events of the last book. Zoe's life has mostly returned to normal, though there has been no contact from Jack since the letter in the last book. The FBI and everyone else believes he's dead, but Zoe knows otherwise. She just wishes she knew a little more. For now, there's her copy-editing job and a hole in the ceiling to occupy her.

That is until she notices a strange, silver car tailing her and watching her house. Her mind goes on red alert. Her life on the LAM may have ended six months ago, but it seems like only yesterday she was running for her life. When she manages to lose the mysterious car, she believes she's safe. Until an unmarked, white van shows up when she's out for a jog, and the occupants come after her.

At the same time, the FBI are interested in her once more, as the money from the frozen GRS account has gone missing again. Feeling increasingly unsettled, she decides to act when a package arrives with her missing wedding ring, and a string of numbers in it, and a postmark from London. It has to be Jack. She needs to lay low anyway, why not visit London?

Maxing out all her cards, she picks up and leaves, with a brief message to Helen, so her best friend doesn't worry. At the airport, ready to leave, she runs into Sam- a man who rents one of the office spaces left vacant after the GRS affair. He has business in London and happens to be on the same flight, but the events in Italy have made her wary and cautious. How much does she want to tell him? Who can she trust? Is it just a coincidence?

Meanwhile, Victor Costa (a man who used to be part of Camorra- the Naples mafia, and Francesca's husband) has a plan. He's been searching for Jack all these months, but it seems the American really is dead. With his scapegoat out of the picture, it's time to find another. His ex-wife will do.

The plot of this book is very similar to the first, just against a different backdrop. Instead of Vegas and Italy, we have London and Germany. This book is not quite as fast-paced as the first, but it still does its job. I must also commend the author for her ability to end every chapter on a cliffhanger- forcing me to read the next one.

For those who didn't read the first book, or those who's memory of it is a little foggy, there is some recapping of the events from Elusive, making this a stand-alone book as well, though things will be less confusing if you read the first book. Mort and Sato also return in this book, though they're not quite as prevalent in this one. Mort is a couple weeks of from retirement, so I'm wondering who'll partner Sato in the new book.

As you may have realised, Victor Costa is in this book. The mysterious man surrounding Francesca from the first book, makes his first appearance. This story carries on the GRS plot from the first. Nothing was tied up, Jack is still a wanted man and nobody knows who the scammer was.

The ending of this book finally brings it all together in a neat, little bow, and even manages to set up the plot of the next book (at least I think that's what it is) Deceptive- which will be out Fall 2013 according to the author herself. It's heavily implied that Zoe will again come under suspicion and I wonder how many times she can be incriminated before everyone gets fed up, characters and readers alike. For now, it's still as enjoyable as it was in Elusive.

Speaking of, the characters are much the same merry band from the first, with a different bad guy plus henchman. If you liked them in Elusive, you'll like them here. Same goes for the plot. Like I said, basically same plot, different settings.

An enjoyable, fun read, with likeable characters and a little sightseeing mixed in. I will be checking out the next instalment once it's released.

Shallow and short

I enjoyed the first book and am glad because I can divide the price of this one and the free first one and not feel too ripped off. 326 pages for free, 183 pages for $3.99.

A lot of what I liked about the first book is missing here - the descriptions of the heroine's best friendship, her side job jobs, her house care woes, her being own her own, but not quite - and mostly, still being very resourceful and fun with a funny backstory.

While she's resiliant once in the beginning, this book is more about men, and whether or not she can trust them. It's almost all travel/action and while it ties up plot points it has almost no relationship moments at all. And honestly, if I were her best friend and she'd lied to me again about something so huge - and pulled a dissapearing repeat, I'd be over it.

And the book is short, I read it in less than 2 and a half hours; to me it's comparable to watching an espisode of Castle, or the Mentalist. More of a short story not very complicated mystery with old and known characters that plays out in a predictable pattern.

So, if the first book was a decent pilot, this is just another weekly episode. I was dissapointed.

About the Author
Ngaio Marsh, born Edith Ngaio Marsh in 1895, grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. She wrote 32 mystery novels between 1934 and 1982, earning her widespread acclaim and comparisons to Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Margery Allingham. In addition to writing, she pursued her passion for theater and directed a number of plays as a member of the University of Canterbury Drama Society. She also wrote plays, essays, and an autobiography titled Black Beech and Honeydew. In 1966 she was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her accomplishments in the arts, and in 1978 she was named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. Dame Ngaio Marsh split her time between New Zealand and the UK, and died in Christchurch in 1982. Her home there is now a museum

This is not my favorite Marsh mystery but the entire R Alleyn series is well worth a second//third/and even fourth visit.

If you have the print edition of "A Wreath for Rivera", you've read this one. The father is drawn in very broad strokes - he's too silly for words - but the plot and other characters are up to her usual standards. I liked it, but think it's not one of her very best. Still worth a read, though, for her depiction of jazz clubs in the thirties and atmosphere of the place and era.

Good review of the Series

I have reread the entire Wheel of Time series several times over the years. Every time a new installment would come out I would have to read the series again to refresh my memory.

So I was thrilled to discover this entire recap of the series up to the last book prior to the finale. The recap is very good. She hits upon the most relevant parts of each chapter and I appreciate what a hard thing that must have been to accomplish. As the author herself says she had the most trouble trying to not quote the entire chapter in places. Great Job.

Now the downside. After each chapter recap we are subjected to the authors personal summation and commentary. At first I found this interesting in relating the discussions and debates that went on during the run of the series. Quotes by Jordan himself addressing certain issues. And even pointing out some inconsistencies in the story that I missed. However this soon digressed into lengthy feminist, progressive, diatribes that I found very monotonous and distracting. **headdesk, headdesk** "sheesh not this @*#% again!"

But I soon just started skipping the commentary at the end and only reading the chapter recap. Which is what I bought the series for to start with. Much like turning off the director commentary on a DVD. Once I did that I was back to thoroughly enjoying the refresher course.

Leigh does such an amazing job. By the time we got to book 10, I felt I was reading the series with a friend. Excellent capture of the essence of the story and very witty commentary that made it all that much entertaining.

All Hail the Recap

After reading many reviews that suggested missing book 10 in no uncertain terms, I found this. Look, I have slogged through books 1-9 and after the first three or four I too discovered the wonder that is skimming. I am not sure I would have made it otherwise. I was daunted by the tales told of book ten that it was WORSE than the rest. How could this be possible? Yet how could I skip a book? Ms. Butler to the rescue!
Unlike others, I found her commentary very funny most of the time. Though she does not warn when she is about to unleash a spoiler upon an unsuspecting public. More to the point, if you do not share my enjoyment at the nerdtastic references that she makes in comments, skip them! You will at least be freed from the verbosity that is Jordan's book 10 without missing the story.

Repetitive

Just a collection of articles (with a clear liberal bias) published in the Washington Post between 2010 and early 2013. Although it contains some useful information, the articles are SO repetitive that it's hard to keep reading. If you want a much more balanced and interesting read on the general topic, I recommend Gun Guys: A Road Trip by Dan Baum instead.

Pretty One Sided

As a pro-gun individual, I may be subjective about some of my appraisal. But with that said, it's my opinion that the information was one sided for the anti-gun reader. The pro-gun advocates earned the term "die hard" but the anti-gun advocates, who I've found to be as "die hard" as any group I've met, did not. The NRA is far from an ideal organization, but they do perform many worth while activities and projects. I didn't find any discussion of why many people think the problem is the lack of enforcement of existing laws and not additional laws that will not get the funding needed to support them (I may have missed it if it's there). In 2010, nearly 80,000 Americans were denied guns after providing false information about their criminal histories during the background check. Technically, it’s a felony to lie during this process. Yet only 44 would-be buyers were ever charged with a crime, according to the New York Times. Does any one think the individuals rejected stopped trying to get a firearm? Any expanded background check, if not funded and enforced, will not offer the benefit the politician's rhetoric suggests, and history suggests that's what will happen. Maybe I was naive about what to expect :-)

Make your case

An interesting collection that seems to be tightly focused on wondering why certain gun dealerships sell a disproportionate number of guns used in crimes....the various facts presented are useful and informative, but don't support the central thesis. Kudos for the reporters' creativity in finding ways to get at the facts in a fact-suppressive climate. However, the issue of how guns are used in our society is a complex one and not susceptible to single-thesis explanations.
