The art of flight is in its infancy and there is still a great deal to be learned about it, but there is no more discouraged inventor than he who--discovers a principle and, after having experimented with it at great expense, finds that it is only one of many things that numerous others have spent considerable money in proving fallacious, a great many years ago.

Negative Zero Stars

Don't waste your money. Just google Orville and Wilbur Wright. You will be able to glean more information about a homebuilt aircraft that way. Apparently, the author had zero knowledge of even the most basic concepts of thrust, weight, lift and drag. Much less about center of gravity or load distribution. Might as well also no note, zero information on any actual building construction plans. I had to give it a one star as Amazon doesn't allow negative or zero stars.

The idea of building/flying your own plane is great. However, all of the planes described in this book are from 1920! Besides, this book would only work if you were allowwd to fly everything that you build. (It doesn't take into concideration license, registration, or anything like that. So once agin, a good story,but not very realstic!

Awesome book taught me everything about buildimg my own plane just finished construction on my first bi plane!! Tomorrow morinimg i will take to the skys on my inaugural flight. I read the whole book drunk so ill have a few stiff drinks before take off so ill be in the perfect tempermant for my very firat time ever in a plane much less flying one. After tomorrow mornings maximum altitude test ill rush back to my computer and update everyone right away, stay tuned, cant wait to tell the world how great of an idea this all was.

The art is beautiful; the instruction, not so much.

I love the art used to illustrate this book. It is truly beautiful, balanced in color and composition, and has unusual uses of household items in the making of it. Obviously, the two authors are very good artists and are quite adept at evoking emotion in their works.

However, they are not very good at telling other artists how they do what they do.

Most of the instruction for every technique they present is so briefly presented (at most a paragraph or three) that important details are left out. For example, in the instructions on using waxed paper as a resist, they don't tell you whether to put the paper on the substrate wax side down or up before heating it with an iron. Now, yes, obviously one would put it face down, but it would have taken three words to express that detail. Or, the sentences which state: "Many collage artists use treated papers as elements in their paintings. Geri rubs silver polish or sandpaper on magazine papers laid over stencils." There is no mention made of what this technique does exactly, and the paintings used to illustrate this do not make clear where the technique was used, leaving the reader unsure exactly of what the author is trying to convey.

As inspiration, the art in this book is amazing.

Just don't expect the authors to explain very well what they are doing when they are creating their works.

Mystery + Georgette Heyer + Scarlet Pimpernel=Great Book

As a teenager I devoured every regency romance ever written by Georgette Heyer and have wondered why there aren't any Regency period mysteries. A friend directed me to Kate Ross's Julian Kestrel series, and I am hooked.
Julian Kestrel is, like most of the heroes in Georgette Heyer's romances, a dandy with a difference. Behind his suave and witty exterior lurks a serious young man with great intelligence and compassion. It's that compassion that gets him involved with Hugh Fontclair, who he rescues from a gaming club. After this act, Fontclair invites Kestrel to his home to serve as groomsman at his wedding. Once there, Kestrel meets the family (all of whom have secrets, a la Anne Perry), and discovers a dead woman in his bed. Suspicion turns from Kestrel to his wonderful servant Dipper (a reforming Cockney thief also saved by Kestrel) before turning to the possible connections the lady might have had with members of the family.
If you like the regency period, the Scarlet Pimpernel, or Georgette Heyer I think you will love this book and the others in the series.

Why didn't I read this one sooner!

As most of you, I read all the time and keep books "in reserve" so I am never without one. For a recent trip to London, I wanted to have a mystery set there, and stumbled onto this one. I bought it, but just wasn't sure about it, and kept putting it aside, reading other things. Eventually I ran out of others, and picked it up. WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG? I was captivated immediately by the historical details and the character of Julian. He is interesting, as is his manservant. I was CRESTFALLEN to learn that Kate Ross died recently of cancer. That makes the other three books left in the series ones to cherish. I agree with everyone who reviewed this: buy them all and read them all. I am now on the second, trying to savor it, but it, like this one, is so good it is hard to pace yourself! Enjoy.

A wonderful series that ended too soon

It has been well over 10 years since I first devoured the Julian Kestrel mysteries. I was searching for them to re-read in Kindle format. strong Archy tale

Renowned collector Deci Fortesque hires Palm Beach private sleuth Archy McNally to find an alleged original complete text of Truman Capote's Answered Prayers. Archy quickly learns that Claudia Lester asserts that she possessed the manuscript, but her former lover Matthew Harrigan stole it from her. Matthew insists he took nothing and that Claudia is just a former lover causing him trouble.

Antiques dealer Rodney Whitehead informs the sleuth that neither Claudia nor Matthew is credible not that Rodney is any better. The search turns nasty when the supposed owner of the Capote manuscript is found dead in the sleazy Crescent Hotel not long after Archy visited the place. Police Lieutenant Georgia O'Hara knows Archy is holding out on her, but he refuses to reveal anything that might interfere with completing his client's assignment as the fee is too good.

When Lawrence Sanders died a few years ago and Vincent Lardo took over the McNally franchise, this reviewer howled about another series of lite books. Several novels later, this reviewer still howls that Mr. Sanders would have been proud to claim the Lardo books as his own. The latest MCNALLY'S ALIBI is a strong novel containing an intriguing investigative story line and three women making Archy's life miserable in different ways. Fans of Mr. Sanders, McNally, or a strong private investigative novel will want to read Mr. Lardo's latest take and like this reviewer demand early release of another Arch book ASAP.

Will he, or won't he???

I am so glad that Vincent Lardo has done such a splendid job of taking over where Lawrence Sanders left off. Another job well done. Are there more to follow?
In this latest adventure I must admit to being a bit confused over the characters who may or may not have the manuscript of the late Truman Capote. And the story of the Beaumont family tragedy seems like a bit of a red herring, but interesting nonetheless, especially when Archie is told the real story of the Beaumont twins at the end.
And now Georgy has entered the picture. Good for Archie, and the story line as well! I was getting a bit tired of his on again/off again affair with the jealous Cuban hot-head. Connie should have moved along several books ago, in my opinion. If he had been my boyfriend he would have been toast after the second dalliance, client or no client! And I just don't see her fitting in with the Anglo-Saxon background of the McNally brood. Georgy is like a breath of fresh air. Hope to see more of her in future novels (hint, hint!). All in all, a good read once again.

Another fun Archy read.

The arrival of a new Archy McNally is always a welcome event.
While "McNally's Alibi" is the easily the most densely plotted of the eleven in the series, it still retains its "mystery-lite" quality and is great fun.
It is a tongue-in-cheeky romp amongst the rich and infamous in Palm Beach.
Highway Patrol Lt. Georgia O'Hara is introduced and is a character I hope will stay in the series. She is a much better paramour for Archy then the tedious Connie Garcia.
Double dealing, double crossing, a sting operation as well as a counter sting revolve around the whereabouts of the original manuscript of a Truman Capote novel that an ardent rich collector desires.
Archy and his excellent supporting cast sort out the truth and lies and save the day.
A good time to be had for the reader.
