The Real Game of Thrones

Anyone who has done some reading on the history of Western Europe from the fifth century on is aware of the controversy in academia about whether Rome "fell" or simply evolved to accommodate the cultures of populations migrating into Roman provinces. For adherents of the latter view, there was no "Dark Age" but, rather, a "Late Classical" period. I personally think that Bryan Ward-Perkins dealt rather well with this controversy in "The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization." But never mind all that. Charles Oman's "The Dark Ages" was written when most people still believed that Rome fell hard and that Western Europe was then plunged into benighted, violent, chaos. For reasons that are still being debated to this day, the Western Roman Empire lost its ability to keep the many Germanic tribes from penetrating its borders. The tribal warriors and their families poured in, sometimes with the permission of the emperor and sometimes without it. They set up independent kingdoms, replaced Roman authority, and became the arbiters of justice; they collected and disposed of available revenues; and they displayed, in some cases, violent intolerance for the Catholic faith of their Roman subjects.

However we may interpret the changes that Western Europe endured during this period, the basic facts are known and they make for gripping reading. One of the most interesting dynamics is the rather rapid evolution of the Germanic tribes themselves from wandering warrior clan confederations subsisting on small scale agriculture and raiding to rulers of enormous fixed territories with sophisticated administrative abilities (supplied, in many cases, by their Roman subjects). It is telling, for example, that Theodoric called himself "King of the Ostrogoths" not "King of Italy," despite his firm control of the peninsula and its peoples. He was still too close to his roots as war chief of a migratory tribe.

Oman, in a very readable style, gives us the pitched battles, conquests, intrigues, blood feuds, fratricides (and other assorted "-cides") that draw viewers to "Game of Thrones" (minus the graphic sex). But Oman's world actually existed and the events and peoples he describes continue to exert an influence on our daily lives.

I have only just scratched the surface in my readings on this period and I'm certain that Oman is viewed in some quarters as outdated and superficial. Still, he serves as a good introductory survey of the era because he's so darn entertaining. Despite occasional mistakes in the translation into digital format, you can't beat these books for their entertainment and educational value.

Minus one star for the occasional typo

Damn! This is why the Dark Ages got their name: lack of written records. Obviously the original printed version of this book didn't contain these errors but the original information has become more garbled just in the process of conversion to digital.

That said, this Kindle version seems to have been made with the best of intentions and some effort -- it's not just OCR scanned.

I finished this first volume, having bought all three, and found it so interesting and entertaining that I will now buy an original hard copy to refer to as well.

This is a book that really opens your eyes to the fact that there have to be changes in laws surrounding victims rights. It's a very well written story of such tragic events. It's a must read!

An Absolute Must-Read

I bought this book because the topic really hits home for me. I lost my father a long time ago and his homicide was closed due to his past. The person who took his life literally got away with murder.

This book is quite moving as it tells the tragic stories of how loved ones feel when they have lost their family members to violent crimes. Those who have perished away are no longer able to speak for themselves so it is up to the family to be their voices. I don't think a parent can ever get over the loss of a child nor have I ever truly gotten over the loss of my dad. Especially when they have been wrongly taken away from us.

This book explains how the judicial system needs to be improved, especially when dealing with the laws surrounding the victim's rights. I think it should be a required read for those who are currently attending law school because it is a true eye opener. Readers can't help but to want to find ways to help those who have suffered because of the flaws in our court system.

"I love it" doesn't sound quite appropriate for a book as important as this. Families and friends of homicide victims are changed forever. Pat gives readers insight into the "new normal" they experience, which can be very helpful to those trying to understand why survivors behave as they do.

Read everything that Sara Kate Lynch writes. She is such a great character creating author. I love all her books especially The Wedding Bees. I have bought that book 17 times and end up giving it to another women who needs a good read. You will never be disappointed with a Sara Kate Lynch book. I read the last chapter as slowly as possible because I don't want to leave the people in her stories.

In her trademark style, creating fascinating characters unlike anyone you've read about before but almost exactly like many people you've met, Sarah-Kate Lynch introduces us to Florence, who (to say the least) is about to have some truly rotten things happen to her. This isn't a depressing book, though. If anything, it's uplifting, inspiring and at times great fun. Lynch has a way of introducing real life into fictional tales in a beautiful, delicate, reach-inside-your-heart way. A wonderful perspective-offering read.

Here's one of my favorite and most telling passages:

"In the past I think I had corralled rotten things into groups of three because at some level it gave me the impression I was controlling them, keeping track of them. In my world I believed the universe would only dish out so much s***e before it realised it had overdone it and corrected matters.

That, of course, turned out to be nonsense.

The truth is that sometimes the s***e just keeps on coming and that is what is so unfair. But here's the thing: it's never all shite. If you can wake up in the morning for just long enough to breathe in and out and see the sun shining, you're already surviving it. You're already if not getting around it, at least getting over it, getting past it.

And who knows what can happen then?"

I loved this book Sarah Kate writes with a fresh honesty. Well written. I live her descriptions. She deals with a topic that is probably one we'd all rather not think about and in such a humorous way that it seems not so scary now. Without actually giving advice there is advice to be taken. I know what I will be doing as soon as I get home from my holiday. Thank you again Sarah for another good read. I have read all your books and can't wait for the next one.

Excellent Primer for Aspiring Writers

I first became acquainted with Kelly James-Enger's work early in my career as a writer when I read READY, AIM, SPECIALIZE. I found that book hugely helpful in my burgeoning career as a freelancer. The freelance writing world has changed significantly, and Kelly, unlike some other veterans, has kept up. She knows the landscape has changed. This book serves as an excellent guide to navigating that new terrain.

She gives clear steps to take to learn how to find markets, approach editors, read contracts, and deal with the ups and downs of a freelancing career. She gives a huge amount of information on how to research and write various types of articles. She also provides ten templates (for things like letters of introduction) that you can tweak to suit your needs. She includes plenty of specific resources (some of which were new and valuable to me, even though I've been freelancing just as long as she has!)

Kelly is never a downer but she also doesn't gloss over the realities of freelancing: it's hard work. But she shows how to succeed. The book is written in her usual friendly, accessible style. She's not afraid to admit her mistakes so that you can learn from them.
If you're just starting out as a freelance writer, you'll find this book extremely valuable.

an inspiring book for all writers, especially written for beginners

I have read twelve books on freelance writing and this is my favorite! Read this book if you'd like thorough, practical, and empowering guidance, especially, if you are new to freelance writing. Kelly covers all the nitty-gritty nuances of writing for money. While reading her book, Kelly felt like a new writer friend sharing her wisdom from sixteen years as a professional freelancer with me. I am a new freelance writer who would like to earn money writing. Kelly's book has given me a realistic portrayal and a pertinent toolbelt for me to begin a paid writing career!

Easy to read and valuable introductory advice

I have recently started looking into freelance writing as a part-time money-generating option to fund advanced academic studies.

There's only so many blog posts and interviews you can read on the internet before you want to read a efficient and concise, yet broad, overview about freelance writing from a long-term professional. I came across the author's blog and thought that she made sense. Her writing style, on the blog as well as in this book, is easy to understand, personal, and yet it gives you a very useful introduction.

Dollars and Deadlines will not explain to you how to write articles in detail - it tells you how to sell articles while giving basic (but important!) tips on how to research and structure non-fictional articles. This has been most valuable advice for me and is certainly worth more than the cost of this book.

To sum up, it's a quick read which takes you on a guided tour to learn and understand the rules of successful freelance writing. Many personal examples provide you with a better understanding than the more theoretical or "dated" books on the topic.

Highly inspiring!

Ever since I was little, I enjoyed reading poetry. It always gave me a way out, a way to relieve myself of any anxiety or depression I was feeling at the time. I found this book to be one I thoroughly enjoyed reading through; the themes resonated with my inner thoughts and feelings. I highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed these poems and the diversity of their topics and expressions. I found I could relate to many of the words and the meaning that they shared, with my personal favourites being "Remember", "My Friend", and "Mother". Recommended for lovers of poetry!

Superior letdown

Each book in this series has been something of a surprise. Each one occurs in a different "part" of "The House of the Architect". Up to now, only a tag at the end of the previous volume has given the reader any hint as to the location in the House of the next volume's story.

But Saturday has been hinted at as the master intriguer against Arthur, the Rightful Heir to the Kingdom. She has masterminded the demise of many, including former Key Holders, and nearly Arthur himself on multiple occasions, sacrificing Saturday's Dusk in the second book to set up one such attempt. She was prefigured as a mover and shaker before we knew even the names of most of the other six Days. So I expected the real fireworks to fly in this volume, even though there would clearly be one more to go - Sunday. True, the reasons behind Saturday's destruction of others are made clear, even to her destruction of whole portions of the House. Still, the level of circles within circles found in the earlier volumes is missing here. Once Arthur manages to get to the Upper House, it seems only a matter of time before he subdues Superior Saturday, clearly the most powerful of his enemies.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger at the end, and some uncertainty about the subduing. And we are certainly left with mystery regarding Lord Sunday. I just felt disappointed at the denouement, but perhaps the last volume will show that I was mistaken, and Saturday still has a role.

I can't wait, which shows that I still enjoyed the whole series to date!

Book Six of the series "The Keys to the Kingdom" has the young hero Arthur Penhaligon taking on the oldest Trustee and first Denizen who just happens to be the third oldest entity in the Universe. Superior Saturday is a powerful sorceress who rules the Upper House with the help of thousands upon thousands of lesser sorcerers who do her bidding while stacked in iron framed cubicles with wire meshed floors and no ceilings.

Working conditions suck big time, what with the perpetual rainfall and all, and the job is even tougher for the "grease monkeys" who have to keep the chains and gears in working order. Promotions and demotions are physical moves, sometimes accompanied by projectiles and heckling, and job perks usually mean not much more than a different colored umbrella (ella, ella, eh eh eh)

Superior Saturday is afflicted with the sin of envy, and her sole ambition is to infiltrate the domain of Lord Sunday, through the "Incomparable Gardens". It's up to Arthur, with a little help from his friends, to rise to the top of her Babel-like Tower and secure the Sixth Key.

With this series, you need to read the books in order so as to understand what's going on. This one is very short, but is one of the least complicated as far as the convoluted links that exist between the House and its parts, namely The Lower House, The Far Reaches, The Border Sea, The Great Maze, The Middle House, The Upper House and the Incomparable Gardens. Many sub-plots are left hanging, but the major bummer is the cliff-hanger ending that leaves the reader suspended in mid-air awaiting the final book of the series.

A must-buy for fans of the series in preparation for the final showdown, but a bit lacking in substance on its own.
