I'm sorry, but.....

I don't enjoy bashing any author, because I know how much work is involved in writing a novel.
That said, I was a big, big fan of Lawrence Sanders' Archy McNally series. Sadly, Mr. Lardo misses the mark in his continuation series.
How? In many, many ways.
While an originating author is free to make up his own rules as he goes along. In my opinion, a continuation author is morally bound to keep the basics the same.
He cannot take a policeman/friend, (Al Rogoff) and turn him from a well-spoken policeman into a cop who sprinkles his sentences with "ain't" and totally butchers the English language.
He should know that the Pelican's Simon Pettigrew always would address Archy as "Mr. McNally," and never as "Archy." (If you're going to carry on a man's work, do some research if you haven't cared enough previously to read the first author's books.)
Connie was good enough for Lawrence Sanders, but apparently not for Mr. Lardo.
Maybe I'm nitpicking but Mr. Lardo's A.M. just isn't as interesting as Mr. Sander's A.M. His dialogue isn't as clever. Continuation series books are, in the final analysis, clones of the original books. Mr. Lardo falls short, far short, in this area. None of the characters ring true.
His plots actually are fairly good, but not good enough to make up for his shortcomings. It's only because of my high regard for the Archy McNally series that I read Mr. Lardo's books. Since it's been around six years since the last A.M. books, I'm guessing that others feel as I do. RIP, Archy McNally.

Archy's still tooling around Palm Beach in that Miata

After a hiatus of many years, I dipped back into the world of Palm Beach investigator Archy McNally, via "McNally's Bluff", and enjoyed the experience. Now written by Vincent Lardo, this series still feels close enough to the original Lawrence Sanders offerings that I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Mr. Lardo was assisting Mr. Sanders from the beginning. In any event, it's all here: the cynical but funny observations about Palm Beach's eccentric denizens, the goofy internal politics at the McNally firm, the on-again/off-again romance (mostly "off" this time) between Archy and Connie, etc., etc. The mystery story is pretty good this time out, too, involving displaced "carny folk" and a big hedge maze. So, in the end, while I'm not usually a fan of the idea of keeping a mystery series going after the original author has departed this mortal coil, why complain in this case? The Archy McNally stories employ a playful, enjoyable, easily produced formula that the right writer or writers can keep delivering as long as people want to see it. And, besides, this one ends with a funny but still kind of serious cliffhanger involving Connie, so there's another reason to pick up the next one!

A Good Read!

Vincent Lardo continues to write "in the style of" Lawrence Sanders who create the Archy McNally series. Archy McNally is a Palm Beach private investigator who works out of his wealthy father's law offices.

Archy and the Palm Beach A list are invited to the opening of La Maze. Newcomers to the Palm Beach scene, Matthew Hayes, former carnival cannon ball, and his wife Marlena Marvel, are throwing a party to get in with the "right crowd." Hayes has recreated an English maze at his mansion and the party goers pair off to find their way to the center. But the contest begins only after Marlena recreates her famous impression of Venus DeMilo. But alas, most of the contestants grew increasingly frustrated and not only couldn't find the maze center, they couldn't get out.

Following the maze game, fabulous buffet tables awaited the guests. But the hostess couldn't be found. And then the search was on again -- and didn't end until she was found dead, at the center of the maze.

How could she get there past all the contestants? Who killed her? When? Why? Matthew hired Archy on the spot to find answers. But as he digs in, there are only more questions. Then the most promising suspects, those with the best apparent motives, begin to die, and good leads turn to dead ends.

The characters are believable and include those you'll love to love -- and those you'll love to hate. One caution, if you really care, be prepared to take notes and create diagrams to try to keep up with who is sleeping with who -- and who slept with who, but isn't any more.

Armchair Interviews says: Readers who like fast-paced easy reads will enjoy McNally's Bluff. There are plenty of clues, but many of the suspicions the reader will share with Archy will turn out to be unfounded and red herrings.

Educated at Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, Robinson became a psychiatric social worker before entering the Church of England priesthood in 1978. He entered university chaplaincy at Heriot-Watt University, and the University of Leeds, developing research and teaching in areas of applied ethics and practical theology. In 2004 he joined Leeds Metropolitan University. Books include: Agape, Moral Meaning and Pastoral Counselling; Engineering Business and Professional Ethics; Spirituality Ethics and Care.

Jon Elan, a young newspaper reporter, experiences debilitating dreams that begin to negatively impact his heart. Brenda believes that the murder of her brother, Tony, is somehow related to the burnings that Jon is investigating. He agrees to help Brenda solve her brother’s death and soon becomes the target of two separatist groups; one black and one white. Both groups have something to hide and will do anything to protect their respective secrets.

The more Jon and Brenda get to know each other the more evident their similarities become. They both have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to racial prejudice that they need to resolve.

The more Jon learns about Tony, the clearer the relationship between the church burnings, Tony’s death and the reason why Jon hates Telby becomes.

It is this journey to solve Tony’s death that may enable Jon and Brenda to finally see their true colors.

Did Not See That Coming

This book grabs you and does not let go. I was so caught up reading it that I read it in one sitting. When I thought I had figured everything out, I soon realized that I had not. Of course, I thought I had figured everything out at another point and came to see that again, I had not. This book has just the right amount of intrigue to keep you hooked without frustrating you. The end is a whopper that will surely have you going, WOW, I never saw that coming. Now, that's the making of a good book.

Great Thriller Loved The Twists

This was a great read. The story takes a unique and refreshing approach to a somewhat taboo subject by using paranormal twists. I love the interesting use of the singer, David Bowie as a catalyst in the story. The characters have hidden agendas and alliances some of which were disturbing, but that's what makes for a great story. The book is a quick read and at the end I was satisfied, thoroughly entertained and even felt that I'd learned something.

OMG!!!!! What an awesome book!

It was so good. Everytime I thought I had it figured out there was another twist! I loved the paranormal twist to it also. It flowed at a nice pace and the characters were well developed. I would recommend this book to anyone that's looking for a great quick read!

--Lovely vacation read--

VOICES IN SUMMER begins in a suburb of London with Laura Haverstock, a thirty something woman who has just learned that she must have surgery immediately. Laura, married only for six months to Alec, had been in the midst of planning their fishing vacation to Scotland with a group of her husband's oldest friends. She insists that Alec go on his annual fishing trip without her which he reluctantly consents to do; however, he will not leave until after her surgery and then only if she will agree to recuperate at the home of his Uncle Gerald on the coast of Cornwall.
Laura is about fifteen years younger than her new husband and is filled with worries about his earlier marriage and the friends that knew his first wife. She's also concerned about his teenage daughter who she's not yet met. She's very insecure with her new life! Laura and her little dog, Lucy are made very welcome by Gerald and his wife, Eve. Days are spent relaxing on the patio and swimming at the beach. Eve's son, Ivan is also kind to Laura and takes her on several jaunts around the area. Cornwall is beautiful and Laura finds herself comfortable and basking in the life of a loving family and their social world.
As she heals, Laura begins working out her life and how she'll handle all of the situations that have been bothering her. The dreamy vacation starts to change when poison pen letters show up. The writer of the letters makes nasty accusations about Laura and Ivan. In the midst of it all, Laura is also surprised by a visit from her new stepdaughter.
Rosamunde Pilcher has a wonderful way of writing interesting stories about families and all of the complex relationships that are involved. She also makes me want to visit Cornwall where many of her books take place.

Interesting, different storyline

This novel is perhaps, my favorite in my much-loved collection of Rosamunde Pilcher books. It's a departure of sorts from Ms. Pilcher's typical sagas, in that there is a bit of a mystery involved. I LOVE a great mystery!

The story begins in London with Laura, married for only six months to Alec, finding she must have immediate surgery and therefore ruining their plans for a vacation to Scotland with a group of her husband's oldest friends. She, INSISTS that Alec go on his annual fishing trip without her which he is reluctant to do; however, only if she will agree to recuperate at the home of his Uncle and Aunt on the coast of Cornwall will he even consider this trip without her. This may seem a bit harsh, but Laura is adament.

Insecure Laura, being about fifteen years younger than her new husband, is filled with angst about his first marriage and the friends that knew his first wife. She's also concerned about his mysterious teenaged daughter whom she's not yet met and Alec never mentions.

During her stay, Laura begins thinking about her life and all of the feelings that have been bothering her. The relaxing recovery starts to change when a jealous neighbor goes on a plot to ruin Laura's life. The horrible sequence of events are kept secret from Laura, however there are several unhappy moments for her that makes her grow into a stronger individual.

As if she doesn't have enough to contend with, Laura is surprised by a visit from her never-before-seen stepdaughter who has her own problem to share with Laura.

Rosamunde Pilcher has a wonderful way of writing interesting stories about families; (sometimes) weak women that turn their lives around and become strong.

This was usual for Ms. Pilcher in the lovely descriptions; what I really enjoyed was the "who-done-it"!

Comforting Story of Family Relationships from Rosamunde Pilcher

Rosamunde Pilcher takes us once again to Cornwall, her idyllic kingdom where the people chase away problems with cups of teas and work out frustrations by deadheading their roses. It's a friendly, compassionate world where family is the most important commodity. Laura Haverstock, a thirty-something newlywed in London, has to have surgery at the same time she and her new husband are planning a trip to Scotland with his oldest and dearest friends. Laura has never fit in with the group, in part because they were close friends with husband Alec's first wife. Not wanting to keep him from making the annual trip, she agrees to recuperate in the tranquil home of his Uncle Gerald, a retired Admiral living in Cornwall.

Gerald's new wife, Eve, is never one to turn away a stray, so also living on the grounds are her dashingly handsome son Ivan, a free spirted flute player and her infant son, and Eve's former nanny who is growing more senile by the day. In addition to these characters, there is a lonely neighbor nearby and a long-lost daughter who arrives from America via the Caribbean.

It isn't long before poison pen letters start arriving and the accusations in them are damning. Could a neighbor be a promiscuous trollop? Could Laura be having an affair with Eve's stepson? Where is all this leading and who is sending the letters? With a touch of Agatha Christie like deftness, Pilcher leads the reader down a garden path and unveils the villain.

As in all Pilcher novels, the reader is left uplifted at the end as relationships are strengthened and we can assume that everyone lives happily ever after.

An Interesting Environmental-Post Apocalypse Story

I’d give this book 3.5 stars, but since that is not an option and it is better than a "ok" read, I am pushing it up to four stars.
This was an "odd" read for me for two reasons, the first is because I really did not enjoy the reading of it much, yet somehow became driven to finish it. I put it down a couple of times thinking I would not pick it back up and just move on to another book, But I found myself picking it up again until I decided to push through to the end. It just would not leave my mind.
The other reason that this was an odd read for me was that I loved the characters, but disliked the world of the story. A dust land full of dust and dust and dust.. yeah that is redundant isn’t it. There was a lack of variety in this story’s settings. To me, it felt like I was watching a two setting stage play. First this room (stage), fade black. Light second stage, Fade to black. Repeat. My mind was crying out for depth and variation.
Yet the characters were well written, rich and full of complexity. It is the characters’ stories; their emotions, their motivation and hardships that makes this book.
The theme of this story is bleak. The overall tone of it is depressing, to the point that I’d call it a tragedy.
It is the same message as many of the environmental apocalyptic stories out there, but it is the telling of this one that stays with you.
Judging from the ending, I would assume that there is a sequel and oddly enough if there is, I would read it.
Do I recommend this book? Yes, but I’m not promising a five star read, just an interesting read that keeps the reader wondering.
NOTE: There were parts in this story that had graphic violence. Due to that I would not recommend this to readers under the age of 17, but I am a bit conservative on my views on violence.

I love it

I really loved it, I bought it and I started to read it honestly I couldn't leave it down, it took me to somewhere else, I loved the small details I felt like I am seeing the picture while I am reading it. its full of feelings. I love it and I will read it more than once that's for sure.

Thoughtful take on the world

"The Man in Black - The Woman in White" shows us what the earth could be like in almost 200 years if we keep on letting it go to pieces and allow money to rule the world.

Stross presents us with a world without hope, a dark story of loss, poverty, inequality and disinformation. The town of Present, Nebraska thinks the world works in one way, and it seems they have been intentionally kept in that belief. Maintaining this status quo is the will of the people who hold power to change the lives of the citizens of Present for the better.

One of the tools the powers that be uses to keep the people of Present in Present is lack of education and information. Another tool seems to be to allow companies to move in and "encourage" farmers to sell their land and water-rights.

Stross encourages me to question my own beliefs of right and wrong. Exactly who is the culprit and why do I consider that person to be a culprit?

Poor young Kyle, living in circumstances that quite a few young people live in today. Desertification, water shortage and hunger are all parts of the lives of young and old in certain places of the world. There, too, tools such as the ones used against Present, Nebraska are utilised. "The Man in Black - The Woman in White" speaks of a world that already exists for many and will probably exist for many more in the years to come.

Stross doesn't give us a solution or an answer to the problem. I appreciate that. Having an open ending allows me as a reader to look around and see if an answer exists at all.

A great book for little kids to learn about that teasing is a very mean thing to do also the first story I have read that showed or made fun of the F.G.W (fat girls of the world) and how it is very mean and uncalled for also I think that no one should be made fun of.

There is a typo on the very first page..Not good for something written by a so called teacher. The rhyming is terrible. A fat kid should not have to be a sports hero or anything else to be treated with respect and kindness by his/her peers. It sends the wrong message. Save your money. I wish I had.

Needs another 200 pages

I'm a Florida native and love history, and was glad to find this book, which is definitely a keeper. I was lucky to find this in a bin of used books at a decent price. However, I would have been very disappointed if I had paid some of the current asking prices. It's a great LITTLE book, packed with interesting information about certain parts of Florida and quite a few black and white pictures. Whatever the edition, rest assured almost every place he mentions is long gone, and he mentions places I've never heard of.
The author writes well, and doesn't guess if he doesn't know, unlike a lot of the current books on Florida by people who spent a month here in an RV and think they're experts. I just wish Mr. Warnke had enough backing back then to do a MUCH bigger book. We've lost too much of Florida history because of over-development, and photos like these are all that's left. This book was interesting, and may be rare or collectible, but fair warning--this original edition is 104 pages total. It Is A Small Book.
UPDATE: There are some errors in the book regarding place names, events and some of his opinions do not sound like he spent much time talking with the locals about THEIR version of events. Some versions are incorrect, but this is still an interesting little book, just not as fact-based as I originally thought.

This is a great read for those who are interested in Florida's off-the-beaten-path ...

This is a great read for those who are interested in Florida's off-the-beaten-path history. Warnke takes the reader on adventures to ghost towns located all over the state, provides background history, and some black and white photos. The book was written about 45 years ago so I'm sure a lot has changed and the sights described in the book cannot be visited anymore, or at least in the condition that they had been in in the early 70s. Anyway, I found it very, very interesting.

The same material is covered, however, beginning with a basic discussion of what the New Testament is, how it is arranged, and how it became Christianity's canon. The history of the Interbiblical Period is covered so the reader will understand better the references to groups such as Pharisees, scribes, Sadducees, Samaritans, and others. Also, so that the importance of the Greco-Roman world to both Jesus' ministry in Palestine and the nearby Gentile areas, and Paul's travels. I have included 84 photos of artifacts and sites to illustrate the text. Various views of authorship are discussed, and the many opinions are grouped under the general headings of "German scholarship" and "evangelical scholarship." Each New Testament book is examined as to its organization, basic ideas, and distinctives before dealing with the text. There is no verse by verse commentary, but the basic meaning of blocks of text are explained. The book is focused on the evangelical viewpoint but all significant views are explained throughout, including the four views of the Second Coming. In "Contents," links are provided for easy movement throughout the book, and a Glossary is provided at the end of the book.
