Terrific freshman work!

Well-constructed and written to be read, this story is suitable for adults down to early teens. The characters are fleshed-out enough to make you care about what happens to them and there is plenty happening. The action starts out fairly early and rarely slacks at all. The premise is fresh, with some innovations in the story that keeps it from being clichéd or too easy to foresee developments.
It definitely leaves you wanting more, but stands well on its own. The inclusion of the deaf boy and the significance of ASL and non-verbal communication in the story is interesting and progressive. Extra points for that!
I am looking forward to the next in the series, as I am vitally interested in what happened to Christy's grandfather and want to learn more about "The Empty World.".

A different world for a mystery

An intriguing story of teen problem solving using contemporary information gathering. Stopping at the end of a chapter is nearly impossible. You always want to read "just one more..." Even the end of the book leaves you asking when the next book in the series will be out!

Character weaknesses exposed but strengths and talents were emphasized

I liked how the author tried to emphasize strengths and unique talents of most characters throughout their adventure despite their disability, trauma, attitudes, etc. The combination of each person's strength or talent helped the kids survive this adventure. I think young children especially the preteen group would enjoy this book most.
