A Nice Second Act

I really loved "The Mine" so jumped right in to this sequel. At first I was a bit skeptical as it starts off slow and feeling repetitive, but if you stick with it there's a payoff. This is another winner; although I don't feel it deserves the 5 stars that I gave to "The Mine," I'd like to give it 4.5 stars which isn't an option -- so I'm rounding up in appreciation of self-published/low-cost Kindle authors who do a really outstanding job of writing *and* editing their work such that the end result feels like something that could easily be printed by a major publishing house.
PS: I don't write plot synopsis reviews. This isn't a book report and why would you want to spend time reading long reviews and spoilers instead of the book itself? :-)

a little series that has much to recommend it

I had read and reviewed The Mine, which is the direct lead in to this particular story, and picks up to follow Grace and Joel through more adventures. Focusing on Grace, it was an interesting choice to have her travel both forward and back in time, getting a sense of Joel's confusion and difficulties.
However, like the first story, this book was not without its own peculiar set of issues. I will say that Heldt's prose is lovely and he writes descriptive passages with flair and they provide a great sense of place and time. However, the frequent inclusion of these descriptions, and a very thorough detailing of backstory prevented clear forward motion which made the story drag dramatically, especially for those who have read the first book. With such unique and memorable character creation from The Mine, it was detail that did not serve the current story, and actually made connecting with Grace more difficult.
Even with those difficulties to pacing, Heldt's conversational style of storytelling does manage to save the story- pushing through to come to the end, and the little twists that provide some answers are incredibly well crafted and thought through. This is a little series that has much to recommend it, the time travel is done well, even with the minor pacing and styling blips. This is an author who is finding his own particular style, and telling a story that will entertain fans of time travel stories: the points of view provided by the encountered characters that illuminate their own period of history as well as the difficulties they face are a nice bonus and bring the feel of the time closer to the reader.

Popcorn, Potato Chips and John Heldt Time Travel Novels

What do they all have in common, popcorn, potato chips and John Heldt time-travel novels? To quote an old friend, "they're ever so 'more-ish'." As soon as you finish, you want more.
So I launched from _The Mine_ straight into _The Show_, and learned not only how Grace managed to stay with Joel and travel from 1941 to 2000. She also must cope with her own diversion in time, when the now-mother of twins and happy wife of Joel Smith walks into the restroom of a newly-rebuilt theater in 2002 and emerges - alone - in 1918 Seattle.
For Grace, the need to return to 2002 is urgent. She knows the theater in which the time portal rests will be completely destroyed by fire in a few short months. If she cannot find the combination that triggers the portal before then, she'll be stuck in 1918. I also found fascinating the woman's different handling of her bleak knowledge of the future. Unlike her husband when he traveled to the past, Grace finds reason to inform those she knows will suffer in the coming months.
And it appears that there are time portals all over the northwest, because I have just started reading the third in the series, _The Journey_, in which a trip down a dark staircase in 2010 ends in a chance for a woman in her late forties to revisit the world of her adolescence.
I sincerely hope there will still be more to come - popcorn, potato chips and John Heldt time-travel novels!
