Using letters and diaries and over 70 rare photos, this book tells the fascinating story of Charles Marson, a Victorian clergyman and journalist, who worked in the slums of Whitechapel four years before the Jack the Ripper murders. In that era before the welfare state, his reactions to poverty and the workhouse are powerfully expressed. He was a member of several of the important socialist groups of the time and knew people like GB Shaw and Edith Nesbit. This is all explained in a human interest, non-academic way.
Because of his confrontations with a complacent Church, he emigrated in 1889 to Australia with his drug-addict brother to start a new life. Colonial life is beautifully observed - particularly his criticism of the treatment of Aborigines.
He returned to England with his suffragist wife Chloe and settled in Somerset. There he helped Cecil Sharp in the collection of English folk songs, which he celebrated as the artwork of working people.
